CHOOSING A CONTRACTOR:
| If you are having a hard time deciding between two
remodeling contractors, may I suggest that you need look no further
than contracts and specifications to help you decide. You can tell
immediately who is the better contractor by what is contained in their
documents -- if you know what to look for! 1. Did they both give you a sample of their contract and terms and conditions to review so you know what to expect when you sign? 2. Did they show you a copy of their insurance certificate with current dates and workman's compensation and liability listed? 3. Did they list a breakdown of the payment schedule in the contract or explain their warranty coverage in the specs? 4. Did they include all building permits in the contract? 5. Did they give you a completion date in writing? If both passed the "initial disclosure" test then check the specifications for details about what you are getting for your money. "Install window in bathroom" does NOT tell you the brand name or model of the window, or any other products or materials needed for installation, or from where the materials and products are being purchased. There is a BIG difference in materials purchased from a bargain home center and materials purchased from a lumber yard. You are entitled to KNOW what you are getting for your money and it should be detailed in the specs! All things still equal, look to their referrals. If one contractor gives you a couple of names and the other presents an 8-page list, who is disclosing more information? Call their referrals and talk to them, or better yet, go and visit a job. Most people are proud of their newly remodeled home and would be glad to show it off. Still undecided? Then trust your instincts and follow your feelings of comfort and trust. |
